Last week I overheard a conversation in which a lady who works in HR told a bartender that since he has visible tattoos, he will never get a job.
That made me think, will your appearance determine if you will get hired or not? Is there still a negative mindset against people with tattoos, bizarre piercings, and long facial hair? Would you pass on a great candidate if they have a facial tattoo?
Would you hire this guy???
If this guy had the brain and drive of Steve Jobs, would you not want him in your organization? Or on your team?
I do understand that different industries have different standards. I’m not sure if I would be okay with my Surgeon having tattoos, long hair and a nose ring. But I would be perfectly fine with working with a developer with a facial tattoo, or a teacher with a lip ring. As long as they are qualified for their job, and the tattoo or piercing wasn’t distracting to other workers.
Recently, we were working with a prestigious private boarding school helping with a position. We found a great resume and had an excellent phone screen with this candidate. When the time came for us to do a Skype interview, we noticed he had a face tattoo. As a team, we had mixed feelings over if we should present him to our client or not. What would you do if you were presented with this?
Leave a comment below and let me know what you think! Are we as a society becoming more open minded to this? Or are tattoos still taboo?
