They say you have 7 seconds to make a first impression.  Your LinkedIn Headshot is your first chance – don’t blow it!

It seems like in the last couple of months, there is a growing number of unprofessional LinkedIn profile pictures. After seeing the picture below, I decided it was time to write a post about what your LinkedIn picture should be like.

Yes that is an actual picture from a third connection on LinkedIn. It is definitely NSFW (that’s Not Safe for Work), and therefore, not safe for LinkedIn.

While I was looking up other unprofessional LinkedIn pictures, I came across a great Tumblr Profile that shows unprofessional LinkedIn pictures.

Here are my suggestions for how your picture should look like:

1. Your profile MUST have a headshot.  You will not be taken seriously on LinkedIn without one.

2. Make it a headshot.  Just a headshot –  not a picture of you at a wedding, or you catching a large fish, etc.

3. Smile – you are having fun!  A profile picture is your chance to make a good first impression.  You should be inviting and smiling in it. You want someone to WANT to meet you and know you.

I understand that people might want to be creative and show their personality in their picture and profile, but remember that your next customer or manager will be looking at your profile, and you want to put your best foot forward!
